Turning toward Torino

-or- One of my favorite times

I can't believe it has already been four years.

Living in Utah in 2002 was a fun experience. No, I did not get to go to any Olympic events live. Not only did I live a ways away, but it was notoriously difficult to get time off and tickets for folks like me (read: students supporting families). And so we had to enjoy them through the miracle of television. Still, seeing places I had been, recognizing city streets, buildings, even mountain peaks I had climbed, biked or gone skiing on was a blast.

The time is upon us again, but of course, not in a location I know anything about. But it doesn't seem to make a difference. I am just excited. And I am not even really a sports fan! Sure, I love to play sports, but I don't watch much more than my beloved ACC basketball and then all of March Madness and the NCAA tourney I can get.

But there is something about the Olympics. For me, at least, they do still seem to transcend politics, nationality, and sports to become something more. I suppose I still see in these athletes the fire and drive to be their very best, a true demonstration of the power of the human spirit. It excites and invigorates me.

So, for the next couple of weeks, I will be turning my eyes toward Torino.

I am not a big olympic fan. The commentators always have to make someone the villain. It used to be the Russians, E. German's etc. now it's the Chinese.

I also can't stand the whole mushy, overcoming all obstacles stories. You know what would be refreshing is a I was a rich kid who had every advantage and big bucks to spend on training and now I'm at the Olympics story.

But hey to each his own, you enjoy and I'll be watching alternative programming. Go USA.

I can't believe it has been 4 yrs either. Heck, I can't believe it has been 12yrs since the whole Harding-Kerrigan circus.

That's kind of how I felt regarding coverage of this years Super Bowl.

I'm not a big sports fan either. I am just not a competitive person. However, I do like the Olympics, particularly the Winter Olympics because most of the sports are individual sports. I admire the committment and tenacity required to excel in something like speed skating or downhill sking for instance. I am looking forward to the games, for sure.

The villains in the last one were the olympics officials themselves. It highlighted how crooked and obscene the whole mess is, with members of it IOC being considered criminals, and some even not being able to attend meetings without fear of arrest in other countries. Then there was the whole judge tampering thing, too.

Maybe this one will be different. I blogged on the opening ceremonies, which were about as good as any. Re: Locomama's mention of political statements, I really dread the upcoming one in China...
