In a video created by the "We Are Family Foundation," many cartoon characters are used to promote tolerance. I'd like to remind readers that "tolerance" does not suggest that you need to agree with a particular set of values or lifestyles, it simply means that you will tolerate them. Tolerance, I should also point out, is a far step from acceptance which is really what the progressive community should be striving for.


I think this article should be severely edited. Everytime "Christian activist groups" are mentioned in this article I think it should be replaced by "Christian Extremist Groups." Just as when Jerry Falwell ousted Tinky Winky as the queer Teletubby, these people and their rediculous claims cannot suggest they represent the views of reasonable well-meaning mainstream Christians.

Any Christians are free to disagree of course.

If Spongebob can encourage kids that being gay is (*GASP!*) okay, then they'll probably want to be gay too right? And in turn they'll probably carve out a pineapple so they can live in it at the bottom of the sea in Bikini Bottom too. Oh the horror, so many gay kids will be drowned at the hands of a bucktoothed talking sponge. If Spongebob was gay, would he really live in Bikini Bottom...I mean...come on!

I noticed this story last night, and it's hard to believe . . . there are children in the country who are starving . . . vets coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan missing limbs . . . elderly people struggling to obtain the basic necessities, not to mention desperately needed medication . . . there are children being beaten and sexually abused and preyed on . . . and on and on . . . and THIS is what the "Christian" groups choose to put all their efforts into?

It makes me sick.

First of all, my kids love Spongebob. (Hell, I love Spongebob) He's not a sexual character . . . he's a freaking sponge!

Second, I WANT my kids to learn to care about ALL people, and I would worry about parents who don't think that's a worthwhile goal for their children.

I am baffled by the actions of these "Christian" groups.

How true, TW. It appears that these so-called Christian groups see homosexuality everywhere they look, even when it quite patently isn't there. If their God really thinks this is a priority at a time like this, then he's no God of mine.

Excellent post, Suspeckted. It only remains to warn all good Christian parents - keep your pineapples locked safely out of reach ...

I saw this on MSNBC today and was so disgusted I had to bring it to other people's attention.  The general consensus is that it's a 'bitching to hear the sound of their own voices' deal.  I agree.....and you would think, as Tex said, that they'd have better things to bitch about what with wars and stavation and Tsunamis going on.  But no, they pick on a freakin' cartoon sponge. 


My advice to them would be to #1 get a damn life, and #2, take a look outside the window and see what's going on in the real world the rest of us inhabit.  Take off the god-squad rose-colored spectacles and see the horrors of humanity...and quite being so damn petty.

I like Sponge Bob. Sure, he acts fruity, but he's not gay. Why else would he be doing panty raids?
Sure, I might object to how tolerance usually means "tolerate homosexuals and popular minorities, but F the smaller unrepresented minorities", but there's nothing wrong with the message Sponge Bob and company were trying to promote.

Well with all those holes you never know... (Wow, wait till the media gets a hold on that...whew)

Anyway, great article Suspeckted. My thoughts are exactly the same...I'm not sure what's with all the Christian homoparanoia....makes you ashamed to be a Christian sometimes....can't have any harmless fun without being morally wrong or promoting homosexuality.

Calling a barely living underwater creature animated into a TV show gay is as stupid as a kindergarten dropout. Christians really need to lighten up on everything being gay. That's why I'm glad I'm Catholic. We just lay low and let the Christians overreact

Amen! It really begs the question of how many people should be required to hold this opinion to have it be newsworthy. Falwell (the tinky-winky incident) is not held in high regard uninanimously by Christians. Furthermore, if there happened to be a large number of people who thought the Pope was gay would we have to discuss it on the news as a reasonable claim? With all the priest molestation contraversy still fresh in many people's minds such groups should be very careful of where they point their fingers. I'd say your children have a much greater chance of being warped by a priest (a chance that's still low) than an animated sponge driving around in a hamburger.

Are Spongebob and Patrick were getting it on behind closed pineapple doors? I'm not sure, but let me get back to you on that after I listen to every single one of my kids' CDs to make sure there isn't any homosexuality promotion inbetween the lines like I found while reading Go Dog Go.

This post actually changed my mind. It's possible that Sponge Bob might be gay, and much of the cartoon consists of references toward homosexuality. Why do I say that? Well, I remember how in The Little Mermaid, there was a phallic on the cover, and a priest with an erection. Also, in many of the cartoons I've seen nowadays, there are references to things definitely not for children.

The preist didn't have an erection, it was his knee sticking out from under the tunic. If you look at anything long enough, you will probably be able to find something sexual in it.

I think I already replied to this matter in someone else's blog, but I'll say my piece here, too...

First, I'm Christian, and I can see through the mire of the "gay" cartoon crap...at least I hope that is what their intentions are. I believe that homosexuality is sin, because my Bible says it is. My Bible also says that *I* as a heterosexual, sin every day as well...so blah about that. I'm hoping these groups' intentions are to protect our kids. As a teacher, I'm glad that our textbooks are becoming more diverse. Ten years ago there weren't hardly any minority groups or people with disabilities relfected in the pages of those books, and today there are, and that's AWESOME! I want my first graders to see "oh...that kid in a wheelchair can add, too." or "Oh...that Asian kid knows all about time!" or something, you know? But if I were a parent, I think I'd have a hard time knowing that my child was having seeing a homosexual-led "family" in the pages of those books. I'm not saying that I want my kids to be clueless like I was for a long time about homosexuality and gays and lesbians, but I'd rather that it was something we talked about as a family versus having a teacher having to answer questions about it in the classroom, you know?

Does that make sense?

On the other hand...they're freakin imaginary characters that just cannot be homosexual. A sponge that lives on the bottom of the sea? A giant purple dinosaur? Give me a break. There are millions of people on the other side of the world that need time and money right now. Homosexual animated, imaginary characters should be the least of our worries. Kids are just watching the shows for fun...they're not thinking about how Barney is gay or how Bob is gay, you know? They just don't really care about those things unless mom and dad shove it down their throats.

PS...Christians out there....we're called to love sinners EVERYWHERE! No matter what the sin "committed," you know? We do bad things every day too...

I have the version that still has the phallic symbol and the excited priest on it, and yes, it is an erection. I've never seen a knee rise like that nor does it make sense why his knee would be rising.

It being his knee just doesn't make any sense. He's not even moving, and yet there's activity happening down there? Perhaps it was meant to be his knee, and Disney artists just can't draw.
Also, the phallic was part of the temple.

Agreed, there's sexual humor in all kinds of animated movies that's way over kids' heads so parents don't fall asleep watching them. Apparently it's the parents that can't handle it, because no child would notice a phallus castle on the cover of the little mermaid.

Marcie - thank you for having the courage to share such an opinion. But I am curious about your "protect our kids" comment. How does teaching kids about tolerance for homosexuals threaten children?

As I mention on my article on the subject, nothing, so long as the aim isn't to indoctrinate, only to teach people how to respect people they may differ with.

According to those who have seen the teacher's guides, this goes much further, creating awareness of homosexuality, and attempting to defeat "myths" involved. Given those "myths" are mainly religious beliefs, an attempt to defeat them passes far, far beyond "teaching tolerance". Telling kids in public school that their religion is wrong is heinous, and hijacking cartoon characters to do it is even worse.

I'd love to get my hands on the downloads to jduge for myself, but both the ADL and the We Are Family Foundation removed them once the furor started. I suppose we won't know what they are sending now until it is sent.
