ill try to explain as best im able what happened. as you probably know, under the 'solid' crust surface of the earth there is extremely hot molten (or liguid) rock known as magma. you've seen pictures of the red-hot lava that occasionally flows out of active volcanoes? the earths surface isnt really solid but consists of a number of sections known as 'tectonic plates' that float on top of the magma. they are constantly moving but very slowly by our sense of time. at the point where two plates 'collide' one will be forced downwards while, in turn, forcing the other upwards and over itself. this is the process that creates mountain ranges among other things. it may take decades or centuries for two plates to move. as they collide in extremely slow motion, first friction and then pressure builds up constantly until one or the other is forced up or down. tiny slips produce small earthquakes--some so small they cant be felt or noticed without a sensitive machine. big slips cause big or even huge quakes like the one yesterday.
there are also places where one plate moves away from another causing a huge rip in the surface that will then fill with liguid magma which eventually cools to become solid.
when the plate borders are under an ocean the movement and shock creates tidal waves or tsunamis.
im not going to speculate whether such events are directly caused by god or if there is a god to cause them. but it is a natural process no unlike the tissue of a human blood vessel weakening and then tearing and causing a hemmorage or an organ swelling to block fluids from reaching their proper destination and causing illness or death.
