The baby came home on his week-aversary (as JLO calls it) and is doing well. This province (perhaps all do) sends out a visiting nurse the day after newborns come home, so he has been seen twice since he got home--the second time to monitor his jaundice which continues to linger.
He and JLO are doing incredibly well as is the whole new little family. Nursing has taken on a pattern that is good for both mom and babe, and you can see the bonding going on. Daddy is happy to sit cuddling his sleeping son while he watches sports, and to participate in whatever needs doing. The baby, who still can't focus at any distance but is attracted to lights and movement, seems more interested in hockey on tv than other sports--a real little Canadian. He continues to be an incredibly good natured baby, only squawking when he's being changed (this house is chilly! and yesterday he was circumsized so I'm sure that's not fun either) or if he thinks he's starving. He makes it easy for them as first time parents, although I have warned them that there will be days when it's not so easy (and perhaps another baby who will be the polar opposite!). Tomorrow he goes for his first pediatrician visit, so we'll see if he's gaining weight and what the jaundice situation really is. It's hard to remember that he is a preemie since he's bigger than JLO was at full term, but he is, and that brings certain issues with it that it's easy to forget about because of his size. He is already more awake and alert than last week, so between the socializing and his sweet nature, all goes well.
If there is any fly in the ointment, it is the usual thing of having to sort out all the advice that is being offered vs doing what the kids feel is best. And as with any couple, they are pulled in various directions. So the usual new parent stress is there, along with some hormones for her, and keeping insulin levels in check for him, while the baby sleeps on.
I am trying to stay low key and keep out of the way. Not sure exactly why I'm here most of the time as there isn't that much to do. Will see when B goes back to work tomorrow if that changes. I was hoping to leave this weekend, but was reminded by the husband that part of my being here is to keep JLO from doing too much, and if I leave we know she'll do just that. So we'll see. Not sure what the kids have in mind for my departure--I suspect it changes depending on what else is going on.
So all goes well. He is definitely a beautiful little boy. JLO, KT (who was here for the weekend) and I were trying to decide what is more mesmerizing: a baby, a kitten or a puppy. It's pretty insane, the amount of time we are all able to sit and just watch this baby do nothing--every noise and twitch seems like a new miracle. At least with a puppy or kitty there would be some bouncing around. But I'm pretty sold on this baby thing...
