Warning! Spoilers ahead. If you haven't watched the NFL games this week, stop now lest you find the results from a few games spoiled...
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Now that the warnings are over, here's a few thoughts on the happenings in the NFL after (at least most of) the first two weeks are in the books.
First, congratulations to coach Jim Zorn on getting his first win as an NFL Head Coach. The Redskins made it more difficult than they should have because they just couldn't seem to get the ball into the end zone for the first several possessions they had. They moved the ball just fine, and actually were fairly well in control of the game but... they were getting field goals, not touchdowns. They finally solved that problem, but not until after they had missed what may have been a critical field goal. Luckily they were able to get past that and pulled out a nice win. Again, congrats to coach Zorn.
Next, I have to say that the end of the Denver vs. San Diego game was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. What should have been called a fumble was blown dead when it shouldn't have been, and from there Denver went on to score a touchdown they shouldn't have been able to score. Follow that up with a 2 point conversion that was pretty darned, well, ballsy. (Suffice it to say that Shanahan has a brass set!). Rather than playing for the tie and going into overtime, well, 2 points for the win baby! After that it was pretty much academic as San Diego just couldn't get within FG range in time to get a kick in and win the game. And oh, yeah, did I forget to mention that earlier in the game the "official" replay equipment was not available to review a play that San Diego wanted to challenge?! It seems that Norv Turner is back to his old luck. 0-2 to start the season. Uh, yeah, where's the love for Norv Turner? (Excuse me a second, I have to try to find the number for any other head coach for the owner/general manager of the Chargers to call and bring in
)
Finally, speaking of head coaches that shouldn't be making themselves comfortable -- the situation in Browns land is getting pretty pathetic. Mis-management of time outs, poor play calling, players that just don't seem to be as well prepared as they should be, and more. I actually feel sorry for my uncle from the Cleveland area as I'm sure he's not happy with the team currently. I expect to see turnover there soon, though who they'll bring in remains open. They could always swallow their pride and bring in their former mortal enemy (he of the chin, Bill Cowher) and see if he could get that franchise back to where the fans like to think it belongs. If I was Romeo Crennel, I think I'd be careful about answering the phone as it could be team management calling to tell him to hit the road.
I think that's about it, other than, uh, wait, I should take a second to mention that I'm glad I really don't listen to the announcers all that much when watching games. If I was listening to the Redskins broadcasts I'd have been pretty close to throwing bricks at the TV with the former 'smartest coach in the NFL' Brian Billick doing commentary on FOX Sports' broadcast of the Redskins game today. What little I actually heard wasn't too bad, but then again when I did hear Billick speaking up it just made my blood wanna boil a bit. Thank god for mute buttons
