'sadly'--if the rest of the statement is an accurate expression (and i've no reason to believe otherwise)--may just be this year's most outrageous understatement. i'm not sure extreme apathy can be properly considered tragic; if not, it's so damn close as to be nearly indistinguisable.
if nothing else, you're paying for it--both directly and indirectly. your children, should you have any, will be paying for it after you're gone.
what happened on 9/11 and what happens today in baghdad can be directly attributed to citizens of britain, france, germany and italy (among others) who were of like mind back in the first couple decades of the 20th century thus enabling their governments to boobytrap what was then the future but is now our present.
