Being self-confident is one of the best things you can do. Pity will only get you so far, so talk to her and then just step up to the plate and ask her straight up. Make it something simple, something non-threatening, something where there will be other people there. Makes the whole first date thing easier.
Don't worry about what she will say or do, just ask her because you would like to spend time with her, and that will come through.
