Well we all expected it to happen at some point.  I'll have to admit though - the speed and efficiency they've demonstrated in mucking it up is truly impressive.

I have been fighting a Windows Update failure on my Windows 8.1 tablet through 3 factory resets. WU works fine, up to a point. I wonder if this is part of my troubles......hmmmm

Actually, I will probably "upgrade" (?) one of my 8.1 rigs that has at least 10 GB ram, a 6 core CPU, an SSD, and a high mid range gfx card (in it's day), just to compare to 8.1 with the same hardware. Keep the other 3 with same hardware as 8.1, at least until I can get a feel for 10.

I have 4 rigs with the exact same hardware other than mobo. So I should get a good comparison. 4 of my rigs have 6 core AMD CPUs ( 2x 1045T, 1 x 1055T, and 1 x 1075T.), 120 GB SSDs, and comparable gfx cards, ( 2 X GTS 450, and 1 X GTX 650). I have a core i7 rig with a GTX 560 twin but it's on a locked down mobo.

Which should I put 10 on? I'm thinking one of the 6 core AMDs, so I can compare with 8.1 on same hardware. What do you think, Mark?

Hehe, Yeah!  I picked up the vibes coming across the moat [Pacific] and thought: "Exactly!"

I'd probably put 10 on on of the AMD x6's, myself... say the least important one in terms of backing up, etc.  That way it's less work and easier to undo if it doesn't pan out. 

Me, I have either a Pentium 2nd Gen, with 16gb Ram,  a GTX 560 and a 240gb SSD... or an AMD x6 1150T, 16gb RAM, 120gb SSD and a GTX260 or a 8800GT.  Either machine will do as neither has anything on it ATM, just old [unused] XP from the dinosaur age... I'll just make a decision as to which one on the day.

Win 10 is more a 'Thelma and Louise' way to go....

Tells me nothing, and my experience doesn't need easing, so I don't think so.

It won't be 'free' on a new rig.  Wonder if OEMs will continue to offer Win7 as an option once W10 becomes the default new-rig OS?  Hope so.  Surface Pro 3 was in my plan but not so sure now, unless the ability to maintain control over updates is preserved in some fashion.

that's part of the nagging upgrade thingy that's been published before quite a few times. (the bulletin article itself is rev 12 i think) could have sworn i have it hidden but it appeared again.. smack in the middle of me playing mmo.. as if my machine isn't too laggy (cpu/ram issue... ) as it is.... as bad as the antivirus checking for update while the game is in windows mode (i suspect it doesn't check for updates if the game is full screen... meh)

Having previously hidden KB2952664 (see reply #16), it "auto-unhid" itself and was offered up again this morning as an "Important" update.  What was also noteworthy was the absence of the usual SysTray icon alerting one to new updates.  Only knew it was there when I opened the StartMenu, noticed the little shield in the Shut Down button & then opened Windows Update.

They know there is a little war going on.  Keep an eye out for more sneaky moves.

KB2952664 showed up again in today's slew of updates.  Had to hide it for the 3rd time.  Devious, disrespectful bastards, MS.
