Jimmy Eat World
Jim Adkins has a serious talk with his girlfriend in the grousing “Work.”
A rosy guitar opens the single, setting an eager tone. She tells him she’s heard enough. He asks her to please not shut him out. A talk will end whatever’s bothering her. He reassures her that he thinks of a future with her. He wants to communicate with her. He needs her to give him a chance. (“If you only once would let me/Only just one time/Then be happy with the consequence/With whatever going to happen tonight/Don't think we're not serious/When's it ever not/The love we make is give and it's take/I'm game to play along.”)
In the chorus, he says he would like to get out his house for a while and take a long drive somewhere. He wants to spend as time with her as possible before she changes her mind. (“All I can say I should've said/Can we take a ride?/Get out of this place while we still have time.”)
It’s likely going to be their last conversation. He’s going to say whatever on his mind. He has everything to lose at this point.. He admits he’s not the type to show his feelings but he can try. (“The best DJs are saving/Their slowest song for last/When the dance is through it's me and you/Come on, would it really be so bad/The things we think may be the same/But I won't fight for more/It's just not me to wear it on my sleeve/Count on that for sure.”)
An extended chorus is sung. (“All I can say I should've said/Can we take a ride?
Get out of this place while we still have time/You want to take a ride?/Get out of this place while we still have time/We still have time.”)
In the bridge, he says they both did things wrong. She doesn’t give in, either. She objects to it and starts yelling at him. He thinks to himself that if they had a stronger emotional connection, the argument would be solved. (“Can't say I was never wrong/But some blame rests on you/Work and play they're never okay/To mix the way we do.”)
The extended chorus is sung again to end the single.
Adkins really only cares about his way. When that doesn’t work out, he turns on his girlfriend and whines that it’s over! She’s evil and criticized everything he did! She’s horrible! So much for being the nice guy.
The pesty “Work” gives the worst breakup speech ever.
