Who doesn't like a good pirate story? Actually, me. I mean, I didn't mind a pirate yarn until Pirates of the Carribean III really spoiled it for me. Then I read an anthology called Fast Ships, Black Sails edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer and my interest was revived. The book is put out by Night Shade Books which is quickly becoming a favorite publishing house of mine.
I read the book two months ago but still have the stories lingering in my mind. For me, this is the mark of a good story. I read a lot of books so a story has to be pretty good to stay on my mental desktop. The stories vary in time period and in the amount of fantasy or science fiction included.
Identity, exploration and freedom are all concepts enjoyably explored in the book.
My favorite story is "Boojum" by Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette about a living organism that serves as a spaceship for pirates until the pirates themselves are attacked.
