Moral to the story: freedom of thought ain't so free either...
Freedom of speech isn't as free as you think.
You've got that right, LW. But freedom isn't the absence of authority, but in being held to obey only just and legitimate authority. Our American heritage was built upon freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness....freedom of religion, association, speech, etc.
Reminds me of a quote from Charles Kingsley that goes something like this....
We are not free to do what we like, but we are free to do what we ought to do...
But we are no longer one America, a united people, a melting pot dedicated and working for the common good. Rather , we're divided into special interest groups that clamours for freedom to do what we like..and expect the government to deliver....and it does and in doing so, we lose freedom.
