Can someone recommend an online file service?

I am facing an upcoming intercontinental move (moving to USA) and am in a logistical jam. I will want to save a bunch of data, some largish files but mostly tons and tons of smaller files organized into folders, without making buckets of CDs/DVDs and without external drives. I've been told that there is virtual storage to be had for "free" (I suppose you must suffer ads), but I haven't the slightest idea of what is trustworthy and idiot-proof and functional (reasonable upload/DL times). Can anyone help me? I should say that I am a computer-inept Windows idiot, so it needs to be uncomplex for me. THANK YOU.

And while I'm at it: I will be moving to New York City -- does anybody know how I can quickly set up a telefone and internet connection / can anyone recommend a worthy telefone and internet provider in NY that I could go to in order to get set up with communication right away? Thank you.

I love dropbox and have been using it for years. You get 2 gig free + free storage for referrals. it is very easy to use and they have a very user friendly terms of service.

A Drive is excellent and their free personal plan allows you 50GB which is more than I have found anywhere else for free: http://www.adrive.com/personal_basic

Physical harddrive ONLY...unless the data is not important.

gotta agree with Jafo on that. If your data is irreplaceable don't be cheap about it.

A big, physical hard drive would be my choice as well... what's yours stays yours... and keep it with you in what you're carrying onto the plane.

I would add, if it's important to you upload it somewhere as the backup and then carry on the HD.

I have the cutest little laptop size enclosure drive that I got on NewEgg. It's not much, only 500gb, but the Toshiba drive inside just purrs. No power,  standard USB connection, runs around 40c, quiet. It's got my important stuff and if I ever had a fire I know I would have it all if I grabbed it on the way out. I tend to use it directly instead of as a backup. I have another 500gb also in a clunker case. But it works as well - just not as nifty.
