Somehow in the midst of election coverage, lipstick comments, hurricane guess-i-fication, Biden's gaffs and all the other more important news of the day, I missed a story that I wish I hadn't.  As usual, the passing of someone who is not in the special categories of the news networks goes almost unremarked.  But apparently Jerry Reed passed away last week and I didn't hear a word about it until I heard Tim Wilson sing his song about marrying a woman who talks like Jerry Reed in tribute to Jerry's passing this morning on the Bob and Tom show.  I find that sad.  Jerry brought more joy to people in his life than all the programs Obama, Biden, McCain, Palin and maybe a dozen or so more politicians have sponsored ever did.  Not only was he a genuine comic genius, but he was also one of the best guitar pickers ever was.  His movies and songs and tapes and records will live on in their own kind of tribute, but he will be missed by this very amatuer picker and gazillions like me.  Thanks for the time...SON!

Ah, the passing of Jerry Reed was another event that I started to comment about, but just didn't have the time when it happened, at least not here at JU.

Have to say that I loved his work and still think his role as Snowman in the Smokey and the Bandit movies is one of the funniest things ever.  East Bound and down!

I noted his passing.  My son got to like him for his role in Smokey and the Bandit (I, II and III) and for his singing (he is discovering the oldies).  I will always think of him as the Snowman with "Fred".

MamaCharlie asked me what I thought he would be remebered the most for.  I said it would be the Snowman, I think that is where he had the most exposure.  I don't know how old you are, Terp, but I know I have a couple years on Doc...I remember the silly songs and the magic fingers of the "Guitar Man" from long before that.  It did tickle me to hear young teens calling each other "SON" after the Smokeys made the screens.  I wrote this down in a hurry, I started back to work this week and play time on the computer is limited now, but I went to YouTube and watched and listened to some of Jerry's work with Porter Wagner, Glen Campbell (another very fine picker, if he would just keep his mouth shut) and especially with Chet Atkins.  His southern wit and his faux abrasiveness were priceless.

one-eye and i were just talking about jerry reed the other day. we have a pretty good cover of east bound and down in the works, and we were hoping for another bandit movie with a new trans am, our song, and the original cast.

 guess not.

Wow.  Did he die a natural death?

 

He was one of the few people that could poke fun at his own field and get away with it.  I'm not a country music fan, but I've always been a Jerry Reed fan, and there you have it.

Xing loi, just keep the music going, TA and that would be the kind of tribute ole Jer would dig.

And there you have it.  Jerry was the kind of musician who crossed all boundaries and had fans of all descriptions.
